Hotel Tiffin Sambar is always the addiction to all of us. It can be done in various ways either with moong dal or toor dal. Usally in hotels they add raw onion paste to sambar to give best taste. So tried this time by grinding raw onions along with freshly grounded masala. It came out well . So thought of sharing the recipe in my blog.


Preparation Time:20 mints| Cooking Time : 30 mints|Severs: 3

Ingredients :

Shallots - 10 Nos

Tomato - 1 small sized

Curry Leaves - few

Toor dal - 1/4 cup

Red Pumpkin - 1/4 cup (chopped)

Tamarind extract - 1/4 cup

Salt to taste

Hing - 1/4 tspn

Turmeric - 1/2 tbspn

Mustard seeds - 1tbspn

Jaggery - 1tspn

Oil - 3 tbspn

Water - as required

For Grinding -

Coriander seeds - 1.5 tbspn

Mustard seeds - few

Channa dal - 1 tbspn

Cumin Seeds - 1/2 tbspn

Red Chili - 2

Shallots - 5

Tomato - 1 small sized

Directions :

Soak toor dal for 15 mints . Pressure cook toor dal by adding water and turmeric along with red pumpkin for three whistle. After cool down take out and mash well.

Dry roast the coriander seeds , channa dal , cumin seeds , red chili, Mustard seeds till golden brown. Then grind it along with shallots and tomatoes to a fine paste.

In a pan, heat oil add the mustard seeds & curry leaves allow it to pop. Then add the shallots , tomatoes cook till marshy . Later add the tamarind along with hing & turmeric . Then add the grinded paste to it.

Boil for 5 mints till the raw smell goes. Then add the mashed pumpkin and toor dal and also the jaggery. And allowed it to boil for another ten mints. Then add the chopped coriander leaves and turn off the stove.

Now its ready. Serve it with hot idli dosa pongal ..


Notes :

1.You can add vegetables of your choice. If you are adding you can pressure cook and add with dal or add chopped vegetables while adding tomatoes and boil with little water.
