RIDGE GOURD / PEERKANGAI DAL

Ridge gourd dal or peerkangai paruppu is a simple dal variety which can be made very quickly. This perfectly accompanies with hot steamed rice or roti. The ridge guard dal is very mild and healthy recipe. Today i made this dal with toor dal and moong dal. Instead of toor dal you can also make it with masoor dal. Let us learn how to prepare ridge gourd dal.

Preparation Time : 15 mints | Cooking Time : 15 mints | Serves : 2

Ingredients :

Ghee - 3 tspn
Mustard seeds- 1 tspn
Cumin/Jeera seeds -1 tspn
Red chili - 1
Green chili -1
Ginger - 1 tbspn ( peeled and finely chopped )
Garlic - 2 cloves ( peeled and finely chopped )
Curry leaves - a sprig chopped

Ridge gourd - 1 chopped
Toor dal - 1/4 cup
Moong dal - 2 tbspn
Turmeric powder - 1/2 tspn

Hing - a pinch
Salt - as required

Coriander leaves - 1 tbspn chopped

Method :

1. Peel the ridge gourd and chop them into cubes. Wash  and soak the toor dal and moong dal for 30 mints. Cook this with enough water, a pinch of turmeric powder,in a pressure cooker till 5 whistles. Mash the dal.

2. Cook chopped ridge gourd with little water and a turmeric powder till soft. Then add cooked dal, salt and required water. Bring it to boil on medium heat. You can add water to adjust the consistency of the dal as required.

3. Once it starts boiling, switch off the flame and add the coriander leaves. Switch off the flame. Heat ghee in a pan, add mustard seeds, cumin seeds . When mustard seeds splutters, add red chili, ginger, garlic, green chili, curry leaves. and hing.

4. Saute for a few minutes and pour it over the dal. Mix well. Serve hot with rice or roti.

My Notes :

  1. You can use masoor dal instead of toor dal.

  2. You can temper with cooking oil instead of ghee.

  3. You can also add little lemon juice after turning off the stove.
