VAZHAKKAI KARA KARI / RAW BANANA SPICY PORIYAL
Vazhakkai is also called as raw banana. I have already posted masala curry, podimas and chips with this vazhakkai as side dish. But this a spicy type of poriyal which suits to have as a side dish with sambar, rasam, curd rice and even with variety rice. The flavor of freshly grinded paste with sambar powder adds major flavor to this poriyal.
Lets look at the procedure of making this poriyal.
Preparation Time : 15 mints | Cooking Time : 30 mints | Serves : 2
Ingredients :
Raw Banana - 1
Oil - 3 tbspn
Mustard seeds - 1 tspn
Urad dal - 1 tspn
Curry leaves - few
Sambar powder - 1 tbspn
Turmeric - 1 tspn
Salt - to taste
Water - as required
To Grind:
Coconut - 4 tbspn
Ginger - 1 inch piece chopped
Garlic - 2 pods
Cinnamon - 1 small piece
Cloves - 3
Fennel Seeds(sombu) - 1tspn
Procedure :
1. Grind all the ingredients in the to-grind list to a fine paste. Wash and peel the skin of raw banana and chopped into bite size pieces and keep it ready by immersing in water. In a mixing bowl add the grinded paste, salt, turmeric, red chili powder .
2. Then drain the water and add chopped raw banana and mix well. So that the masala get coated well. In a kadai heat oil add mustard seeds, urad dal and curry leaves. Allow it to turns golden .
3. Then add the masala coated vazhakkai and mix well. Add the required water and cook the vazhakkai by covering lid.
4. Once the vazhakkai is cooked nice and soft. Open lid and cook in low flame till the poriyal gets dry and crispy. Turn off the flame once done.
Now the Raw banana spicy poriyal is ready to serve with sambar and rice.
My Notes :
You can also par boil the banana with turmeric first and then coat the masala and cook it with tempering. You can also do it that way.
Instead of sambar powder you can add red chili powder also.
